SoCΨ: Key Policy Input

The first few months of 2024 have already been busy!

Following the November 2023 parliamentary hearings investigating the state of readiness for the planned expansion of MAID for sole mental illness conditions in March 2024, SoCΨ reviewed testimonies and briefs and provided additional feedback to the federal Ministers of Justice, Health, Mental Health and Addictions, and Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities before the release of the AMAD committee report.

Following release of the AMAD committee report, which recommended pausing the planned March 2024 expansion of MAID for mental illness, the government introduced Bill C-62 to pause any MAID for mental illness implementation until 2027. While Bill C-62 passed third reading in the House of Commons by an overwhelming majority, several of the dissenting senators had indicated they could urge the senate to not approve the pause to MAID for mental illness expansion, leading SocPsych to write to the Senate before its deliberations on the Bill at the end of February.

SoCΨ was also a formal signatory to the call from leading national and international suicidologists to develop and implement Canada’s first national suicide prevention strategy.
